"AND TENDER TEARS AND LOVE AND LIFE…"

Victor Pogadaev, Russian Poet
01 Jan 2018

This phrase from the famous poem of the famous Russian Poet A.S. Pushkin "I still recall the wondrous moment" to full extends reflects the creativity of Aminur Rahman - one of the most prominant modern Bangladesh poets, writing in Bengla, true successor to the Great Rabindranath Tagore.

Verses of the poet with some touch of existentialism affect the most dear, intimate and understandable for everyone the world of love. Aminur Rahman’s poetry wins the hearts immediately after the first reading. And often forever. An amazing mystery that permeates it, captures and leads deeper into the depths of meaning and rhythm. Mesmerizing is metaphor, strange, original, and in fact very oriental.

Love in his poems is earthly, sensual (he boldly introduces eroticism in his poetry), but at the same time it is unearthly, as if floating in the sky. He compares his beloved sometimes to "A star beyond the galaxy”, sometimes to "A lotus in the river" but it always remains in "My heart’s sky " (Love V). Sometimes his beloved is elusive. He cannot figure out who is she though connects with her by thousands of invisible threads:

Sometimes you feel familiar,
at other times, unfamiliar.
Sometimes the play-of-light lives in you,
other times, only pre-dawn’s darkness.
Sometimes you seem so simple,
at other times, full of doubt.
Sometimes you seem to be in this world,
other times, in some other.
Sometimes you are child-like,
at other times, just endlessly silent.
Who are you? Who are you?
(Solitary dependence)

And sometimes his beloved is the creation of his work, as in Greek mythology is Galatea, a beautiful statue which the sculptor Pygmalion made of ivory and fell in love with her. Poet sculpts the body of the beloved "From the mist’s dense cape", and it "floats on that river", "freeing itself, leaving behind sun’s light and fog’s ephemeral body” but like Galatea, it does not leave him, "entwined with my soul -- its root, plinth, and depth" (The Sculpture). For his love, the poet is ready for everything (“I can die,// I can kill,// or I// can be saddened, //and walk// the endless paths forever”) (For You).

The poet has a lot of love, he is ready to share it with his beloved (Full Moon Night) and does not regret that "My perpetual diary’s everyday starts with you!" (Perpetual Dairy).

Verses of Aminur Rahman filled with the world around him: “With the music of water//With the wave of air//With the magic of a bird" (Waiting for you for thousand years!). And he is not indifferent to what will happen to this beautiful world. He hates “Undesired rumours//Melt-fluid ganja//Humans are killer-machines//that lead to epidemic” and hope for "continued life" and "an endless blue sky" (Life I).

The poet gives freedom to words, entrusts his experience and imagination to the language. From only dozens of letters of the alphabet he manages to create a huge number of variants of poems about love, expressing a common experience of the artist, as a ring on his finger, which, as if becomes his extension of his personality and makes a unique style, shape and color.

Aminur Rahman's poetry one first understands by the heart and intuition, and only then by the mind. Perhaps this is a feature of any truly national poetry. Such, for example, is the poetry of A.S. Pushkin with whose poem line we began these notes. With them we would like also to finish the introduction in order to underline the optimistic character of Aminur Rahman’s creativity:

And now, my heart, with fascination,
Beats rapidly and finds revived
Devout faith and inspiration,
And tender tears and love and life…
